The project is titled ‘Intercultural exchange on local food systems’ and brings together associations from Germany and Portugal.
In September 2023, a group from Portugal travelled to Germany to engage with the creators of Globalfield Berlin. They share a mutual interest in land regeneration and promoting sustainable land use practices.
The Global Field project originated from an assessment of the Earth’s geography, particularly focusing on the 1.5 billion hectares of arable land available globally. This amounts to approximately 2000 m² per person per year, encompassing all aspects of life: food consumption, clothing production, and the cultivation of crops for animal feed and biofuel.
In Berlin, a team established the first Global field, covering 2000 m² to serve as a model for global land utilization patterns.
Could the establishment of a 2000m² field in Portugal catalyse community dialogue on sustainable consumption practices?
The local Portuguese associations Jardim do Mira and Project Earth collaborated with the German Foundation for the Future of Agriculture and the Regional Center for Education for Sustainable Development.

From September to October 2023, with the support of the Erasmus+ Adult education program, we developed participatory activities to adapt this concept to the reality of Odemira. In February we started a cycle of 6 monthly workshops to plan the next implementation phase with the various local shareholders.
The overall goal of the project is to redefine food systems through a bottom-up, community-based approach. We are focusing on knowledge transfer between Germany and Portugal, with all partners spending time at each partner location to share their experiences, learnings and achievements.
